The Great America Sale – Trade the Shrinking Dollar for More Seminar

Great America Sale Seminar
What products are out there for investment and which products are suitable for you? Why look to the US right now? How can one protect one’s capital? These questions are especially pertinent in this volatile market where investors getting little market direction or are looking to alternative investment tools. To answer these questions and more, Phillip CFD partnered with Phillip ETF, Phillip Futures and Phillip Global Market and organized a seminar held on 30th July called “The Great America Sale – Trade the Shrinking Dollar for More”, which drew a crowd of over 300.
To give a holistic view of investing in the US, experts in each respective field were invited to speak at the seminar. Kicking off our event was Mr Andrew Yap, Director of CME Group, who gave the audience a brief introduction to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the various commodities and currency (FX) products that they handle. Yap’s seminar was followed by Mr Ashley Heng, Associate Director Foreign Exchange at the CME Group, who spoke on the Forex and the new Chinese Ren Min Bi (RMB) FX Futures which is a very interesting topic considering the interest with regards to the Chinese RMB and its relation to the US Dollar.
Mr Rahul Bhalla, Country Head of Vanguard Investments Singapore then introduced Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) to the audience from the perspective of an issuer. Bhalla delivered humorously his presentation on ETF, explaining the basics of how an ETF is an affordable way to invest in blue chip stocks by tracking indices such as the Dow Jones or the S&P 500 without the hassle and high cost of buying each individual component stock. Thus, those who are unfamiliar with the US market can easily diversify their portfolio by investing in ETFs that correlate with the respective indices.
Inflation is a hot topic for many investors now as daily necessities such as food are becoming increasingly expensive and unaffordable. However, there is always a silver lining in such times. Phillip Future’s Investment Analyst, Mr Ker Chung Yang, gave a presentation on how to hedge against rising food prices through the underrated soybean which he feels its prices will continue to rise due to China’s increasing import volume. Another favourite agricultural commodity to look at is palm oil, which is high yielding and yet relatively cheap.
On equity investing, Ms Magdalene Choong, Investment Analyst who specializes in Singapore and US companies at Phillip Securities Research, presented on a company – Potash Corp Saskatchewan (NYSE: POT) which is relatively lesser known to the investment community here. Potash Corp is the world’s largest fertilizer company, contributing approximately 22% of global capacity, making them the market leader in the industry. Another attractive point about this company is that its stock prices have received a 10 – 15% premium in 1H11 (EPS $1.79) and management has raised its earnings forecast for FY2011.
Besides covering fundamentals, technicians were not left aside as our guest speaker and experienced technical analysis trainer, Mr Lin Zhong Liang of ChartNexus, went through several popular US stocks such as Apple, Citigroup and Google using advanced MACD techniques to identify opportunities. Lin also introduced Contracts For Difference (CFD) as a product that can be used to profit in both a bullish and a bearish market with small capital outlay because of leverage. Furthermore, CFD can also be used to hedge against any outstanding stock position. Phillip CFD clients would be happy to know that they have a choice between a full hedge (by choosing to short the exact same stock) and a partial hedge by shorting various World Indices CFD that Phillip CFD provides.
We would like to thank CME Group, Vanguard Investments Singapore and ChartNexus for participating in our event and making it a success.
