Understanding the Hong Kong Market with Louis Wong
China is the world’s second largest economy by GDP[1] 2010. With many Chinese companies having exceptionally high average growth rate of 10.2% since 2006[2], it is no wonder that many investors are interested to invest in China. However, it is not a straightforward affair and the “Chinese market” may refer to one or several types of markets or stocks. The alphabets used for each share class may look confusing to a new investor, which is why some turns to the Hong Kong Shares as an avenue to invest in China. Someone who is experienced in advising investors on the Hong Kong market is Phillip Securities’ very own Louis Wong.
Mr Wong is the Dealing Director of Phillip Securities (HK) and the Director of Phillip Capital Management (HK) Limited. With over 25 years in the financial industry, Louis is one of the most experienced fund managers who has hosted several financial programmes on Hong Kong Cable Television, HK Metro Radio and the Putonghua Channel of Radio Television Hong Kong, which hailed him as the best financial analyst for 3 years in a row. Drawing in his expertise, Mr Wong has recently published his second book entitled “股市是平的” which loosely translates that “The Stock Market is Flat”.
Using personal anecdotes, Louis’ latest investment book touches on how global economies affect each other and thus, buying a stock and holding it will not ensure that it will be profitable due to the corresponding stock market movements. Moreover, the Hong Kong market is very much affected by the US. According to him, it is imperative to track the four major world indicators (Gross Domestic Product, Purchase Management Index, US Institute for Supply Management and JPMorgan Global PMI). Using his stringent stock selection criteria, he shares how to read the Hong Kong market (even any other markets) and how to utilize alternative investment tools such as ETF and CFD to gain a holistic and diversified portfolio.
Non-Hong Kong residents will be glad to know that Louis Wong will be in Singapore for the Shares Investment Chinese Conference on 17 September to talk about the Hong Kong market as well as the general market outlook. In addition, copies of his book will be on sale at a special price of S$30 (usual retail price of S$35) with an autograph session from 11.30am to 12.30pm. We hope to see you there!
